IPU AGM, Sunday 11th May 2008
The IPU held their AGM in Enfield, Co. Meath on Sunday 9th May. Delegates heard that Pharmacy remains in crisis and that many of the issues at the heart of the dispute are 'far from resolved'. Progress in talks with the HSE has to date been slow, but with both parties due back before the High Court on May 26th, it is hoped that things will improve. According to Liz Hoctor, Vice-President of the IPU, "This should be a time for restoring trust and there is a need to develop a good working relationship between the HSE and the Union". However, she also cautioned, "If this does not happen, further conflict is inevitable". Despite this, it is important to remain optimistic and to trust in the abilites of Mr Justice Peter Kelly to drive this dispute to a positive conclusion.
News - 22nd May 2008: Pharmacies get injunction against the HSE
Four linked pharmacies yesterday secured a High Court injunction restraining the HSE from making lower discount payments to them for medicines and services supplied under the Community Pharmacy Contractor (CPC) Agreement. The injunction applies pending the outcome of court supervised mediation and/or legal proceedings. Mr Justice Peter Kelly granted the injunction after hearing evidence that the four -- trading as Kissanes Pharmacies in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny; Upper and Lower Main Street, Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny; and Borris, Co. Carlow -- were at risk of insolvency if the payments were not maintained. The injunction applies pending the outcome of court supervised mediation between the HSE and the Irish Pharmacy Union aimed at resolving the long-running dispute over the HSE's decision to reduce payments for services supplied under community medical schemes. Mediation is due to begin on June 5th.
